Rick Maxwell: About The Current ArtWorks Exhibition at Renaissance Tower
Rick Maxwell is a Dallas-based artist whose work spans the most fundamental concerns in sculpture and drawing: what a thing is made of, and how long it takes to become itself.
For more than two decades, he has worked from his studio in the Cedars neighborhood of Dallas, shaping wood into arcs that seem to hold motion in a suspended moment. His practice draws from a wide range of woods, each selected for its distinct grain, strength, and expressive potential. Through bending, layering, and joining, these materials are transformed into forms that echo the rhythms of the natural world.
Alongside these sculptural works, Maxwell’s large-scale charcoal drawings extend his language into line and shadow, commanding space with equal presence. The works evoke both the quiet endurance of the natural world and the slow accumulation of time within it. Through bent forms and rendered curves, he visualizes the rhythms beneath the surface of everyday life, transforming material into a meditation on patience, craft, and the measured beauty of things that take time to become.
The works presented here were selected expressly for this exhibition, an act of translation from the large, open spaces where Maxwell’s work is typically experienced, to the more intimate scale of framed windows opening to the street. To stand before the art is to encounter time made visible, in the grain of bent wood and the slow spiral of a curve rendered in charcoal on paper.
