Across the Board - U.S. China Relations through a Superheroic Lens

  • Business Council for the Arts 8687 North Central Expressway, Suite 2131 Dallas, Texas 75225 (map)

Across the Board is a series of fascinating conversations featuring directors of the BCA Board on art, business, and the topics of our time.

About this Event

Courage is a universal human trait. “Heroism” is an ethical concept that varies from culture to culture and, within the same culture, over time. This lecture will explore the origin, history and nature of a Heroic Ideal that originated in Greek Antiquity and its surprising impact on American culture at multiple levels - from popular culture to the COVID Pandemic, from business to national and international politics. Put another way, what do Achilles, Bobby Fischer, Batman and former president Donald Trump have in common?

Dennis M. Kratz is the Ignacy and Celina Rockover Professor of Humanities and Director of the Center for Asian Studies at The University of Texas at Dallas, where he served as Dean of the School of Arts and Humanities from 1997-2019. His scholarship and teaching focuses on the reception and transformation of ideas, concepts and practices inherited from Greek and Roman Antiquity.

Across the Board is a program of Business Council for the Arts that shares the expertise of BCA board members across a broad range of topics.
