Glass as Gesture, Color as Language: About Simon Waranch’s Art

Simon Waranch works with glass because it is volatile, physical, and alive. Grounded in traditional Venetian glassblowing techniques, his practice unfolds as an ongoing dialogue with molten material, where heat, gravity, breath, and split-second decisions shape each form in real time. The resulting works carry the evidence of that exchange: rhythm held in pattern, movement suspended in color, gesture made permanent.

Across sculpture, mixed-media works, and immersive installations, pattern and color serve as a connective language. While forms may echo one another visually, none are repeated. Waranch embraces unpredictability, allowing process to remain visible and the material’s energy to animate each piece.

In his mixed-media works, blown glass enters into conversation with paint and sculptural wood elements, expanding the visual vocabulary across disciplines. In contrast, the “Skittles” series distills form to a simple circular gesture. Individually intimate and restrained, these blown-glass elements accumulate into expansive fields of color and pattern, transforming space through repetition and presence.

Ultimately, Waranch’s work is driven by a profound love of making, creating objects and environments that feel alive, intentional, and unapologetically themselves.
