Last Rain and First Breath by Du Chau: About the Commissioned Art Works at Dallas Arts Tower

As part of the Dallas Arts Tower renovation, two major new art installations by Dallas-based artist Du Chau delicately meld the artist’s Vietnamese heritage, the natural environment, and memory.

Made up of over 2,000 hand-rolled porcelain coils, Last Rain V (2026) recalls the foliage of Vietnamese weeping willows. The wire-suspended ceramics transforms longing in the Vietnamese American community into a tree reaching for the roots that sustain it.

In the shape of America’s geographic outline, First Breath (2026) takes inspiration from the mountains and wildflowers of Texas. The installation expresses the merging of land, personal memories, and migration. Floating ceramic forms gather and rise, suggesting a deep first breath taken in a new place, country, or memory.
